Cityspeak is a project that was first conceived by Jason Lewis at the Obx Labs in 2005. This particular instance of the installation was created for the Montreal Science Centre who invited Obx Labs to present CitySpeak a second time as part of Technofolies, an event that brought together games, creativity and interactivity to look at how technology is changing the world of leisure for children.
The event gave us a chance to play with new visuals for the installation by integrating the stable backend of Cityspeak with our experimental typography work on ComplexType. Participants send messages via SMS to a dedicated phone number and see their comments, stories, greetings form and animate on a large public display. Messages gradually materialize, rendered by thousands of particles that slowly leave traces to reveal the words, and recede back on predefined tracks until they dissapear.
